Brown Girl Surf Storytelling

Storytelling lies at the heart of brown girl surf's origins. The journey began with founder Farhana Huq's writings and blogs chronicling her experiences as a brown girl surfer. These were written at a time when little to no platforms existed to elevate diverse voices in the surf and ocean worlds, and before the explosion of social media influencing. This journey also included creating media that celebrated diverse perspectives in surf culture and highlighting trailblazing women and girls creating waves of change in surfing around the world.

In 2012, brown girl surf launched its hallmark storytelling initiative, "Surfing Possibility"—short documentaries on the first female surf communities of India and Bangladesh that captured global attention. The project exemplified brown girl surf's commitment to narrative shifting – a mission that surfaced when Farhana contemplated the question "What bothers you about the world?" during the organization’s founding. Her answer: "That brown women do not hold main dialogues or drive discourse in many arenas in this country - surfing being one of them."
