WILD Surf WRiters

Where Water Women write

Picture

“You simply need a pen, a notebook, and a willingness to write poorly.”

WHERE IT BEGAN: MOROCCO 2020
Wild Surf Writers began in 2020 while l was locked down as a surfer in Morocco.

I invited an intergenerational group of fellow water women to convene in my living room — to sit, drink tea, and write together in community. I offered prompts from curated poems for timed writing exercises.
We shared four agreements in our circle:

  • Our pen could never leave the page
  • We’d do our poorest writing
  • We’d share what we wrote
  • We wouldn’t comment, praise, judge, critique or say anything about one another’s writing
The process was so transformative that when I returned to California, I began offering these circles online. But I missed the spirit of quaint, in-person, community.

So this year, I decided to re-launch
Wild Surf Writers as an in-person community writing circle program for water women in the San Francisco Bay!

WHO THIS PROGRAM IS FOR
Wild Surf Writers is for surf sisters, sea lovers, and women whose inner worlds ebb and flow with the tides. This is a women's writing circle, rooted in shared experiences of body, water and voice.

Wild Surf Writers lives within the lineage of Brown Girl Surf, a platform named in homage to the first water women of Polynesia and shaped by my own personal experience of feeling like a misfit in a male-dominated water world. This circle was created as a space where women could gather without having to explain themselves—where misfits are welcomed and belonging is not earned.

You do not need to surf to belong here. If you feel called by water—whether through ocean, rain, rivers, memory, or movement—this circle is for you.

You need not have any prior writing experience to belong here either. You simply need a pen, a notebook and a willingness to write poorly.

HOW YOU'LL BE GUIDED
As your guide, I’ll offer poetry, prompts, and a safe, spacious structure for us to ride the waves of our inner worlds together. I will be writing and sharing alongside you through the process.
THE PHILOSOPHY OF WRITING POORLY
When we let go of our inner perfections, we bypass limitations and tap into authentic nuggets of our inner knowing.  It’s these nuggets that lead us to transformative realizations and to our most powerful writing.

This is an invitation to come write poorly, and wildly with me in community.
